Post-doctoral Fellow in the HKU Institute for Climate and Carbon Neutrality (Ref.: 537278)

Duties and Responsibilities
The appointee will collaborate closely with the supervisor and core research team to advance AI-enabled Earth observation initiatives. A primary focus will be driving the research and technical development of iEarth, an HKU-incubated Earth intelligence platform.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Conducting innovative research in remote sensing, geospatial AI, spatiotemporal data analytics, and related applications in climate and sustainability.
  • Designing and evaluating research methodologies, AI/ML models, robust data workflows, and functional prototypes.
  • Bridging research and application by working alongside technical teams to translate academic outputs into integrated platform features and practical demonstrations.
  • Authoring and preparing high-impact academic papers, grant proposals, comprehensive project reports, and technical documentation.
  • Supporting the laboratory by performing other related research duties as assigned.
Requirements

Candidates must possess a degree in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Science (GIS), Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Earth System Science, or a closely related discipline.

Appointment levels will be determined by the following qualifications:

  • Post-doctoral Fellow: Requires a Ph.D. along with a proven ability to conduct independent research and generate high-quality academic outputs.
  • Senior Research Assistant: Requires a relevant Master's degree, postgraduate qualifications, or substantial equivalent research experience.
  • Research Assistant: Requires a relevant Bachelor’s degree.
Core Competencies:

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong programming skills with advanced proficiency in Python.
  • Domain Expertise: Hands-on experience in remote sensing, geospatial data analysis, machine learning, or adjacent fields.
  • Communication: Excellent written and spoken English, paired with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Teamwork: Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in large-scale geospatial data processing, AI model deployment, or the development of research software and scalable platforms will be considered a strong advantage.
What We Offer
The appointment will commence as soon as possible on a temporary basis for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
