School of Future Media
The School of Future Media (SFM) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is a newly established interdisciplinary school dedicated to advancing education, research and creative practice at the intersection of journalism, documentary filmmaking, artificial intelligence and the global creative industries. Established in October 2025, the School brings together HKU’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC), the Division of Documentary and AI Filmmaking, and the Division of Global Creative Industries, creating a distinctive platform for innovation across factual storytelling, screen-based media and emerging creative technologies.
Building on the longstanding strengths of JMSC in journalism education and multimedia storytelling, SFM promotes an integrated approach spanning the humanities, creative arts and technology. It aims to prepare the next generation of storytellers, scholars and creators through interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical inquiry and engagement with the evolving media landscape in Hong Kong, the region and internationally.
SFM offers undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate programmes for a new generation of media professionals, creative practitioners and scholars. Current offerings include Bachelor of Journalism, Media and Artificial Intelligence, Bachelor of Arts in Global Creative Industries, Master of Journalism, Master of Journalism (Documentary Filmmaking Specialisation), Master of Arts in Creative Artificial Intelligence Film and Media, and a rigorous and interdisciplinary MPhil/PhD programme designed for aspiring scholars in journalism, media and communication studies. The Position
The position is open to all areas in one or more of the following or related fields, including but not limited to:
- AI and generative AI in filmmaking
- Animation and game design
- Immersive and interactive media
- Computer vision
- Data journalism, data analytics, & technologies
- Business and finance journalism
- Digital humanities
- AI applications in journalism practices
- Entrepreneurship and innovation
- Global creative industries with expertise in one or more of the following areas: gaming and digital humanities, visual arts, heritage and museum studies, cultural industries, performing arts, visual communications.
Duties and Responsibilities
The appointees are expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and curriculum development, supervise postgraduate students, conduct high-quality research, and undertake administrative duties at SFM.
Requirements
- A Ph.D. degree in film production and film studies, journalism and media studies, computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, and related fields;
- A strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching and mentoring;
- A proven track record in academic leadership and university-level administration;
- A distinguished and sustained record of conducting high-quality impactful research from publications, competitive grants and international recognition for scholarship;
- Strong connections and exposure in media industry or partners in China and/or Asia-Pacific region;
- Ability to establish strategic partnerships with industry and international academic institutions for fundraising, resource development and School’s advancement.
What We Offer
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
