Library Assistant (Fung Ping Shan Library) in the University Libraries (Ref.: 536460)
The University Libraries is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Library Assistant to support the centennial development projects of the Fung Ping Shan Library, as well as the management and care of its rare books and special collections.
The Role
Reporting to the Assistant Fung Ping Shan Librarian, the appointee will provide administrative, operational, event, exhibition, learning and collection-related support for the Fung Ping Shan Library.
Key Responsibilities:
The appointee will be responsible for:
• Assisting with the preparation and administration of international symposia and conferences;
• Supporting visiting scholar and publication programmes, including the retrieval and reshelving of rare books and special collections materials for experts;
• Drafting exhibition descriptions, publicity content, and assisting with display design;
• Providing guided tours and serving as master of ceremonies or event facilitator when required;
• Designing cultural and creative souvenirs inspired by the gems of the Fung Ping Shan Library;
• Providing on-site support for the care of rare books and special collections, including mold monitoring and follow-up actions;
• Overseeing the maintenance of the Chinese Rare Book Room and G/F storage facility;
• Assisting with stocktaking and collection relocation;
• Supporting the reshuffling of closed-stack rare and semi-rare materials; and
• Performing other duties as assigned.
Working outside normal office hours may be required.
Qualifications and Skills
Applicants should possess:
• A recognized university degree, preferably in Chinese Studies or a related discipline; or a diploma in librarianship or a related discipline;
• Proficiency in written and spoken English and Chinese, including Putonghua and Cantonese;
• Basic knowledge of PC and software applications, as well as library bibliographic records;
• Relevant experience in library and information services preferably;
• Strong communication skills and a customer-oriented mindset;
• Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask;
• The ability to work independently and collaboratively; and
• Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges.
What we offer
The appointment will commence as soon as possible for one year on a temporary basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.
