The LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) is inviting applications for the following academic leadership positions:

  • Director of the School of Chinese Medicine
  • Director of the School of Nursing
  • Director of the School of Public Health

Celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2027, HKUMed is the oldest institution of higher education in Hong Kong, China and is well-known as a pioneer in medical education, training and research, while proudly upholding a reputation for morality, vision and care. We have continually set the benchmark for excellence in Asia.  We were ranked 18th worldwide in the subject of Medical and Health in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and 28th globally in Life Sciences and Medicine in the 2026 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject.

As the largest faculty within HKU, we have the School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Chinese Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, and the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy. We also host the School of Biomedical Engineering, a cross-faculty academic endeavour. The Faculty comprises around 320 full-time, highly-qualified teaching staff and 1,600 research and research-related personnel, alongside honorary teachers who are mostly doctors and medical professionals in public hospitals or private practitioners. Currently, there are approximately 3,500 undergraduate and 2,200 postgraduate students in our student body.


The Position

We are seeking distinguished scholars with proven record of excellence in research, teaching, knowledge exchange, along with a strong commitment and managerial competence to support the Faculty’s expanding research portfolio and clinical and teaching activities. The appointees are expected to play a key role in leading the respective School in achieving the highest standard of quality in all aspects of its teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and professional engagement programmes, fostering academic collaboration within and outside the Faculty/University, and pursuing new strategic directions for the further development of the School.


The Person

Director of the School of Chinese Medicine

Applicants should possess the following:

  1. a recognized undergraduate degree in Chinese Medicine registrable with the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. degree in Chinese Medicine or related fields;
  2. a distinguished track record of research and scholarship in the field of Chinese Medicine;
  3. substantial experience in teaching in tertiary institution(s);
  4. substantial practicing experience;
  5. evidence of international recognition for scholarship and professional expertise;
  6. a track record of community engagement;
  7. an understanding of the East Asia context, particularly Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland; and
  8. proficiency in both Chinese and English.

Director of the School of Nursing

Applicants should possess the following:

  1. a primary nursing qualification registrable with the local Nursing Council or an equivalent international regulator, and a Ph.D. degree, preferably in Nursing or other healthcare-related disciplines;
  2. a distinguished and sustained record of high-quality impactful research, as indicated by publications and competitive grants, with substantial practicing experience;
  3. evidence of international recognition for scholarship and professional expertise;
  4. proven excellence in teaching and learning and/or knowledge exchange, services and administration; and
  5. demonstrated administrative leadership and management experience in universities or healthcare settings.

Director of the School of Public Health

Applicants should possess the following:

  1. a primary medical qualification registrable in Hong Kong, and a postgraduate qualification in Public Health Medicine or its equivalent (e.g. F.H.K.A.M. (Community Medicine), F.F.P.H., F.A.F.P.H., F.R.C.P.(C) in Community Health, American Board certification in a relevant discipline and/or appropriate post-certification training in a recognised programme, etc.); OR a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a related discipline;
  2. evidence of international recognition with demonstrated ability to work across different disciplines in the creation of new research initiatives in the field of public health;
  3. a distinguished record of scientific contributions to and professional expertise in the field of public health advancement; and
  4. demonstrated administrative leadership at an appropriate level in public health setting or universities.

What We Offer

The successful candidates should possess the stature of a Full Professor at a research-intensive institution. Appointment as Tenure-track Clinical Professor/Professor and Director of the respective School will be made, to commence as soon as possible, on a five-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment with the Chair Professor title and/or on tenure terms.  Re-appointment to the headship will be subject to the University's established procedures. 

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. A monthly cash allowance will be offered to the successful candidates. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
