Applications are invited for appointment as Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in Bahasa Indonesia (Global and Area Studies) in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Ref.: 536131), to commence on September 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and availability of funding.

This appointment supports the School’s strategic expansion in Southeast Asian Studies and responds to strong student interest in Bahasa Indonesia and the region. The appointee will contribute to language teaching, help shape the developing Southeast Asian Studies concentration within the undergraduate Global and Area Studies programme, and will also support preparations for the future establishment of a new Centre for Southeast Asian Studies in the School.

Applicants for the post of Lecturer should possess a relevant Master’s degree and at least 5 years of experience teaching Bahasa Indonesia to non-native speakers at the tertiary level.  Applicants for the post of Assistant Lecturer should possess a relevant Master’s degree and at least 3 years of relevant teaching experience at the tertiary level. Preference will be given to candidates with a relevant Ph.D. (or nearing completion) and the ability to teach content courses related to Indonesian and Southeast Asian history, culture, or society.

Applicants should be native or near native speakers of Bahasa Indonesia with excellent English communication skills, and be conversant with current trends in language teaching, assessment, and the use of AI in teaching and learning.  The appointee will be expected to teach Bahasa Indonesia at various levels, develop course materials and assessments, and undertake related administrative duties. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and a University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of the basic salary for Lecturers and 10% of the basic salary for Assistant Lecturers.  Other benefits include annual leave and professional leave, medical benefits, and free access to on-campus gyms and libraries.
