Applications are invited for appointments as Professor (several posts) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Ref.: 534315), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment as tenured Full Professor and conferment of Chair Professor title.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong offers B.Eng., M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes within one of the region’s most highly ranked engineering schools. With around 35 dedicated full-time faculty members and state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, the Department provides an inspiring environment where innovation thrives. We welcome candidates from the following areas of Mechanical Engineering:

  1. Aeronautics /Space
  2. Robotics/Autonomous Vehicles
  3. Advanced Manufacturing (Semi-conductor, Energy, Materials)

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field. They should have a distinguished and sustained record of high-quality, impactful research, as indicated by publications and competitive grants, along with proven excellence in knowledge exchange.  Candidates should also have achieved international recognition for their scholarly and professional expertise. In addition, applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to, and evidence of, excellence in teaching, curriculum development, capacity building, mentoring early-career researchers and supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated administrative leadership in universities.

The appointees are expected to lead cutting-edge research that result in technology breakthroughs in the relevant research area. They should play an active role in formulating strategic direction for the Department.  They will also be responsible for delivering high-quality teaching in relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in addition to the engagement in knowledge transfer activities and provision of administrative service to the University/Faculty/Department.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable. A start-up package tailored to the appointee’s experience and research needs will be provided.
