Data Analyst (at the rank of Senior IT Assistant)in the Department of Geography (Ref.: 534060)

We are looking for a Data Analyst to join the Department of Geography to provide technical support for the development of a departmental data repository and associated projects.

 

The Role:

The appointee will provide technical support for the development and maintenance of a large-scale data infrastructure that integrates environmental, socioeconomic, and satellite data. Responsibilities include:

  • Data Management: Assisting in the acquisition, cleaning, and harmonization of large-scale datasets to ensure they are consistent and ready for research use;
  • System Administration: Performing routine administration and maintenance of Linux-based servers and High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources to ensure system stability;
  • Pipeline Implementation: Writing and maintaining scripts (e.g., Python, shell) to automate data downloading, processing, and backup tasks;
  • User Support: Assisting researchers and students with technical issues related to data access, server usage, and basic data visualization;
  • Collaboration: Working with the research team to support the technical needs of interdisciplinary projects and undertaking other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Qualities

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Geography, Remote Sensing, or a related discipline, preferably with a Master’s degree;
  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree should have at least 5 years of relevant post-qualification experience, while those with a Master’s degree should have at least 3 years of relevant experience;
  • Advanced proficiency in Linux system administration, data center operations, and server maintenance is essential;
  • Strong command of spoken and written English and Chinese;
  • Expertise in programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R) and geospatial software (ArcGIS, QGIS);
  • Experience with machine learning, deep learning, and AI techniques is highly preferred;
  • Strong organizational skills, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to work independently.

 

What We Offer

The appointment will commence as soon as possible on a 1-year temporary basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
