Systems Engineer (at the rank of IT Technician) in the Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre (Ref.: 533731)

 

The Role

The appointee will join a small, collaborative IT team to ensure our mission-critical services and platforms remain reliable, secure, and compliant with university policies.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Administer and harden Linux servers supporting core websites, ensuring high availability and smooth operations.
  • Manage virtual machines and plan/execute operating system upgrades and migrations with minimal or zero downtime.
  • Maintain Windows server and Active Directory.
  • Implement and continuously improve IT security measures and conduct information security assessments; implement service monitoring and protections against cyber threats and DoS attacks.
  • Contribute to technical support for seminars, workshops, and events.
  • Provide PC helpdesk support and administration.
  • Assist with facilities maintenance of AV equipment.
  • Occasional Saturday and evening duties will be required. 

 

Qualifications and Qualities 

Applicants should have the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years’ work experience in infrastructure, server administration and cybersecurity management.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Linux server administration and virtual machines management.
  • Proficiency in Windows server administration and Active Directory.
  • Experience with monitoring platforms, preferably Zabbix or Nagios, and proactive service monitoring practices.
  • Solid understanding of information security best practices, including vulnerability assessment and remediation, SSL/TLS management, firewall rules/policies, anti-virus server/client management, backups, patching, and performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with policies on information security and data management and personal data protection practices.
  • Skilled in scripting languages (Bash, Python, Perl) for automation and problem-solving.
  • Experience with Moodle systems and online registration systems is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills, professional attitude, reliability, and collaborative teamwork.
  • Flexible, able to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
  • A good security mindset and awareness of relevant compliance and privacy requirements are expected.

 

What We Offer

 

The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
