Senior Research Scientist / Research Scientist (at the rank of Senior Technical Manager / Technical Manager) in the University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) (Ref: 532119), to commence as soon as possible, on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance.

This position is part of the expanding efforts to develop the University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) into a centre of excellence for the study and practice of collections care, art conservation, and conservation science.

Applicants should ideally possess a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Conservation Science, or equivalent. At least 5 years of experience in the practice of conservation science is a minimal requirement for the post. Preference will also be given to candidates who have international contacts in museums, conservation research institutes, and international professional bodies (e.g., IIC, ICOM, etc.), have published and presented their research internationally, and have experience developing new academic courses. A team spirit and highly developed communication skills are a must.

The appointee is expected to develop a conservation science lab within UMAG, which will include acquiring equipment, initiating a programme of research with a team of two Post-doctoral Fellows in conservation science (to be hired with the appointee’s input), and liaising with faculty members across the University to develop collaborations. Also, working with the UMAG Collections Manager, the appointee will develop and implement a preventative conservation and sustainability strategy for the museum. Lastly, the appointee will contribute to the Master of Arts in Museum Studies programme, developing new courses for an intended concentration in art conservation, including the design of original teaching materials and various assessment procedures. He/She is expected to teach two courses in the programme per year, supervise capstone projects, and support internship and co-curricular activities. Information about the programme can be obtained at https://www.mamuseumstudies.arts.hku.hk/.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary for Senior Technical Manager and 10% of basic salary for Technical Manager.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online and upload a cover letter, an up-to-date C.V., a teaching portfolio, and contact information of three referees. Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until June 23, 2025, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
