Coastal Outreach Hub Manager & Outreach Officer for Swire Coastal Outreach Hub and Outreach Programs in the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS)

Coastal Outreach Hub Manager & Outreach Officer at the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) (Ref.: 530992) (to commence as soon as possible, on a one-year temporary basis (with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance).

The Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS, https://www.swims.hku.hk/) is a research facility of the Faculty of Science, The University of Hong Kong dedicated to provide scientific information to help conserve and sustain Hong Kong’s coastal marine ecosystem.  As part of this goal SWIMS has launched a new initiative, The Swire Coastal Outreach Hub (SCOH), based at Cape d’Aguilar. The SCOH aims to reach different sectors of the Hong Kong community to convey the importance of our coastal systems and empower people to help conserve and protect our rich marine resources.  As such SCOH has a display area focused on Hong Kong’s marine biodiversity and SWIMS research; hosts bespoke educational visits (for secondary schools, NGOs and other interested parties); and arranges tours and other events for the general public.

SWIMS is now looking to fill two positions as part of this initiative: a Coastal Outreach Hub Manager and an Outreach Officer:

  • Applicants for the Outreach Manager position should possess a Master (with working experience) or Ph.D degree with relevant experience in management and outreach activities.  Candidates with experience in a marine or education related discipline would be preferred.  The Manager will be responsible for coordination of the SCOH including advertising the SCOH; coordinating bookings and events; outreach with the local community and managing the SCOH staff and interns.
  • Applicants for the Outreach Officer position should hold a Bachelor’s degree in a marine science related discipline or education-related field and have experience interacting with the general public.  Strong applications from other relevant disciplines are also encouraged.  Relevant background experience in organizing and running outreach programs would be beneficial.

Together, applicants will help establish the SCOH as a space where visitors will learn about Hong Kong’s marine biodiversity; hosting visits and tours for the general public, schools and NGOs.  Irregular working hours on weekdays and at weekends will be required to accommodate various activities.

It would be advantageous for the applicants to hold a clean drivers license, be bilingual in English and Chinese, and to have experience with webdesign and media outreach.  The Manager will be based at both HKU and in the SCOH at SWIMS located at the Cape d’Aguilar; and the Outreach Officer will be based full-time at SWIMS.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V., a cover letter, proof of research experience with evidenced outputs, and contact information of 2 referees.  Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until January 30, 2025, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
